About this deal

I say that solar photovoltaics will form, for the majority of the world, the bulk of energy supply in fifty years – both electricity and other fuels that have been manufactured using solar energy. That’s an entirely beneficial transition both because solar will be cheap and because it is relatively easy to give people in poorer countries access to electricity that’s from PV — compared to setting up huge power stations and taking networks of electricity cables thousands of kilometres. Although still very much a minority view, I think it is a much less unconventional opinion than it was when I started writing the book in 2015. I think that is indeed what he wanted us to take away from this. He hoped we would say ‘Crikey, this is going to be very difficult indeed. We really do need to invest in nuclear energy. We don’t have any choice’. But I think that a lot of his assumptions about renewables now look very conservative. Renewables such as wind and solar are far, far more effective sources of energy than he indicated a decade ago. At least in terms of existential crisis of global warming, both approaches arrive in overall agreement at the same present situation. Rhodes, in my estimation, has more to offer in terms of possible futures from this point forward.

People have lived and died, businesses have prospered and failed, and nations have risen to world power and declined, all over energy challenges. Ultimately, the history of these challenges tells the story of humanity itself. Books often present tantra concepts and practices in a structured manner, akin to a roadmap. This gradual progression helps you build a strong foundation and gradually develop your understanding and skills. Plus, given the personal and intimate nature of tantra, learning from a book allows you to engage with these practices privately. Removing any potential discomfort or embarrassment you might feel in a group setting, allowing you to explore at your own pace. How to choose the best tantra book for youThe book goes into the sources of your energy. It explains the original power that you have ‘received’. In the case of PV, in Travis Bradford’s book he suggests that every time the accumulated volume of solar photovoltaics panels that has ever been produced has doubled the cost has fallen by about 18 percent. Today this number is thought to be nearer 20 percent but he got the number basically right over ten years ago. That means, if solar panel production is growing at 40 percent a year—which is what solar has done for the last fifty years—very roughly the cost will go down by 20 percent every two years—indefinitely—in a relatively smooth decline. And that’s happened with batteries as well. In discussing the modern preoccupation with clean and renewable energy sources, particularly in response to environmental impacts in the developed nations, Rhodes is pessimistic about the ability of these sources to augment and supplant existing dependency on coal, oil, and natural gas. Perhaps due to his past research and writing on atomic weaponry and its civilian application, he believes political and environmentalist objections to nuclear power are either honestly misguided or intentionally dishonest. Sexuality: Tantra views sexuality as a sacred act that can be used to connect with the divine. Tantric sex is a way of slowing down and savouring the experience of intimacy. I’ve heard the distinguished climate scientist Ken Caldeira say that, sure, we should we looking at geoengineering and yes there may be some technical fixes but when you look at the costs, it’s almost always likely to be much cheaper to just reduce carbon emissions in the first place than to geoengineer.

Smil’s Energy and Civilization: A History (2017) is your first choice. This is an extensively updated and expanded version of a book he wrote in 1994. It covers all of the major transitions in human history. Why do you think this book is useful, particularly if your argument is that actually that he underestimates the likely potential speed of change?Yoga: Tantric yoga is a form of yoga that focuses on uniting the body, mind, and spirit. It often includes breathwork, meditation, and physical postures. Increased intimacy: Tantra can help to increase intimacy with your partner by teaching you how to slow down and savour the experience of physical connection. It can also help you to communicate more openly and honestly with your partner about your needs and desires. Minke de Vos teaches Tantra and Taoist Arts to women all over the world. This book mixes theory with a plethora of exercises and practices to get you understanding your feminine energy. The book covers all stages of life from puberty and youth through womanhood, pregnancy and to menopause. The book is based on the Taoist Traditions of the Yellow Emperor and the three female advisers who taught him all about the art of sexual energy and practice. The practices honour our natural feminine energy: to be receptive, soft, sensitive, intuitive and creative, and to use these qualities as a powerful tool to manifest our destiny. Minke teaches how to channel our natural sexual energy and to heal deep-rooted emotions, so that we are no longer controlled by our feelings and these don’t interfere in our sexual lives. As time went on, I came to realise that most people did not want a world in which energy was scarce or its use guilt-generating. ”
