What started as a track meet turned into a romp as the Washington Huskies opened Pac-12 play with a convincing 76-65 win over Arizona State at Wells Fargo Arena on Thursday night.

After a back and forth start left the score tied at 18, the Dawgs (9-5, 1-0 Pac-12) took over from there, dominating the Sun Devils in transition and playing stingy defense to take a 40-23 lead into halftime.

The Huskies had to fight off just one Sun Devil (11-3, 0-1 Pac-12) run in the second half. Arizona State used a 7-0 run to trim the Huskies lead to 44-34. But Washington coach Lorenzo Romar called a timeout and the Dawgs responded with an 8-0 run to open a 52-34 lead with 14:51 remaining.

The Dawgs cruised from there, opening up a 24 point lead at one point in picking up their eighth straight win over the Sun Devils.

C.J. Wilcox, one of five Huskies to score in double figures, scored a game-high 17 points while Nigel Williams-Goss added 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

The Huskies shot 47.5 percent from the field and went 5 of 13 from 3-point range.

Washington plays at No. 1 Arizona on Saturday.
