Chris Kluwe, a former punter with the Minnesota Vikings football team, might have been fired from the team because of his support of marriage equality for gays and lesbians. He was released during the beginning of the 2013 season. Was it because of performance reasons or concerns by his head coach? The head coach of the Vikings, Leslie Frazier, at the time called Kluwe into his office and told him to stop his activism.
Mike Priefer, the special teams coach of the Vikings, allegedly according to Kluwe, stated in a meeting that gays should be rounded up on an island, and that it should be nuked until it glows. He also allegedly stated that Kluwe will burn in hell with "the gays."
I don't know what happened but if Priefer made such horrible statements, there will be other players in that room who heard him. If so, Priefer should be fired for creating a hostile work environment.
Now, those on the Christian right-wing who stated that Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty (who made those terrible anti-gay comments comparing gays to those who molest animals) had his free speech rights violated, will they defend Mr. Kluwe? Of course not.
The Vikings have the right to release any player for his views (though not necessary sexual orientation) and if this is what they did then I, unlike them, won't be hypocritical on my treatment of someone who I vehemently disagree with (Robertson) and someone who I wholeheartedly agree with.
Lastly, as always, you can support marriage equality by joining the Human Rights Campaign or Freedom to Marry. Thanks. Print
