About this deal

Drive burns rubber and is ready to smash through screens everywhere in 4K with a single-disc Ultra HD edition. The film works on every level it's supposed to: Crime Thriller, Fairy-Tale Romance, Emotional Drama, Anti-Heroic Action, it does it all flawlessly. Capacity available for storage will be less; device uses up to 10% of memory for formatting and other functions. WCG and HDR (of the Dolby Vision variety) perfectly compliment the use of light and shadow, helping pull every iota of detail from the opening night sequences, whilst leaving the blacks impregnably inky and black, with vibrant, popping 80's neon pink cast upon the screen. The ease with which he handles violence shows that he’s had plenty of experience with it in his past.

dba Freestar (“Freestar”) for the purposes of placing certain advertising on the site, and Freestar will collect and use certain data for advertising purposes. As mentioned previously, the aesthetic of the film can be a bit flat, with primaries usually looking muted and everything looking a bit soft. The screenshots used do not represent the 4K UHD because of the resolution and HDR downscaling used to take screenshots. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. With the original source using 10-bit color depth at 4:4:4, and the 10-bit capability of the UHD format, there’s more opportunity to distinguish the grade from the Blu-ray’s limited 8-bit depth. I however felt that the scenes of violence stressed the lengths people will go to when trying to gain or protect certain things. The sparse dialogue leaves huge portions of the story that stand and fall on the acting ability of the cast.

A loner, who works in a garage and in his spare time acts as a getaway driver for various low lifes. Coming home one night beat up, the Driver offers to help him out of trouble but things dont quite go the way they planned. If you’re looking for a good time that only ‘90s-era action cinema can provide, then Drive in this new 4K Blu-ray edition is just the ticket. A laconic best-in-the-business getaway driver with a strict professional code has his loner lifestyle turned upside down when he falls for his neighbour Irene. Yet the whole point of being a getaway driver isn’t necessarily to escape the police; instead, it’s not to draw their attention in the first place. As it is barely larger than a Blu-ray disc itself and USB powered, requiring no additional power adapter then you can carry it with you on your travels. Close-ups and clothing are defined beautifully, and those dated ‘90s-era green screen effects look more foreign than ever before as bodies move awkwardly across the screen during those shots. This is rare though, and in most movies, I either keep the volume level as is or I have to increase the volume.

Anyone expecting a 90 minute Car chase movie in the realm of Fast and the Furious and to some extent the classic Vanishing Point will be dissapointed though. Just for reference, I'm using a Panasonic UB9000 and a professionally calibrated 77-inch LGC9 with Dolby Vision. Any textures like those look surprisingly good, as long as they were relatively close to the camera. Combine that with Steve Wang’s skill for fluid action on a smaller scale, as well as Kadeem Hardison’s capability to tap into the story’s dopey humor, and you have one of the more unique action entries to come out of the late 1990s. As we should all know by now, for movie content, 70 Mbps average bit-rate is never enough to resolve grain perfectly, and it isn't on this disc either. They do cover his relationships with the actors, shooting in sequence, and some other production information like that, but they’re far more interested in assessing how Drive works for them on a personal level.

The kind of professionalism that Driver exhibits while behind the wheel also extends to his other actions in the film. The simple fact of DRIVE is that this film was the purest expression of the language of cinema that came out of 2011. This motion-activated spotlight security cameras shine brightly upon suspicious events, plus a siren alarm - leaving no chance for intruders to break into your property. Sure, most movies are 2 hours long and now we have to go into 95 or even 90 Mbps transfers, but this is still more than perfect. Refn being Refn, he didn’t take that road, and instead followed his own muse with his follow-up vehicle Only God Forgives, a film that’s deliberately designed to frustrate viewer expectations. Sigel rated the cameras at 800 ASA, and even pushed them to 1600 ASA at times, so he was able to get decent dynamic range without introducing too much noise to the image.
