An adult-care provider accused of abusing an elderly patient was sentenced Monday to four years’ probation.
Pima County Superior Court Judge Richard Fields also ordered Annuhar Jesus Ruiz to pay ,400 in restitution.
Ruiz, 30, was accused in July of beating 93-year-old Dorris Brown, a resident of Asterion Acres assisted-living facility. He pleaded guilty to vulnerable-adult abuse.
The woman’s family installed a camera in the room, which was how Ruiz and co-defendant Elisa Moreno were discovered.
Moreno earlier pleaded guilty to abuse and was sentenced to probation and ordered to pay restitution.
Assistant Arizona Attorney General Jesse Delaney said comments Ruiz made in a presentence report appeared to be an attempt to justify the abuse, saying he claimed the victim bit and spat at him.
“Not at one time did she do any of those things,” Delaney said.
Ruiz and Moreno were filmed hitting the woman with fists and a remote control, reports from the time of the arrest said.
The victim’s son, Leland Brown, said the family had the camera installed after the woman’s health began to deteriorate.
“We were completely astounded by what was being done to her,” Leland Brown said. “He may well have expedited her death.”
He also said the family incurred additional medical expenses after his mother was taken to a hospital by ambulance.
Ruiz’s attorney, Michael Rosenbluth, said his client was remorseful. He also said Ruiz would not seek employment in the elder-care field again.
