This simple demo shows you how to use the qualities of different forms of the medium to good effect when drawing charcoal portraits. Nitram and charcoal pencils hold better points than other forms of charcoal. You can shape them with a variety of tools, including sandpaper. This will become the lightest tone in your scale, since no area can be lighter than the white of the paper with the ground erased and covered in white charcoal or white conté.

Usually the material is wood. There are a few types of charcoal used by artists to create a drawing. These types of charcoal include "vine"and "compressed". Nitram charcoal is often used for sustained, sight-size drawings; the long oblong strips are lightweight and retain the grain of the wood they were made from. It is an expensive charcoal, consistent in texture, and sold in grades of B, HB and H. Nitram’s hardness allows it to retain a point when sharpened on sandpaper and makes it ideal for creating both subtle transitions of tone and laborious, multi-layered drawings.Kneaded eraser. This tool can remove charcoal from paper. You can also use a kneaded eraser to spread charcoal onto paper in a specific stroke. Using a kneaded eraser as a brush can help you experiment with charcoal drawings. Remember to clean your kneaded eraser with warm water before using it on a white piece of paper. Powdered charcoal is charcoal crushed to a fine powder. Working with specific charcoal, especially powdered charcoal, can get messy. Keeping paper towels handy helps ensure that things remain clean and tidy.

You'll recall that hatching refers to evenly spaced parallel lines that imply a plane. You can use hatching marks to tone in an area. For example, if you plan to make a drawing with a “softer” look, you might focus more on smudging and pay attention to where the light in your drawing is coming from. Charcoal comes in various shapes and forms. With trial and error, you can figure out which types you most enjoy working with and which are most suitable for the various components of your artwork.Next, powdered charcoal is spread over the drawing and worked into the surface with a mop brush and a paper towel. Darker areas are strengthened with the charcoal pencil. It is much messier than Graphite to work with. Even if you use Charcoal pencils you will still find that they generate more dust than graphite. Because vine charcoal is so delicate, (you can easily crush it between two fingers) you can’t get as dark as you would with other types of charcoal. If you’re going to use it for a more polished drawing, you’ll want to reserve it for lighter values. Charcoal may be activated to increase its effectiveness as a filter. Activated charcoal readily adsorbs a wide range of organic compounds dissolved or suspended in gases and liquids. In certain industrial processes, such as the purification of sucrose from cane sugar, impurities cause an undesirable color, which can be removed with activated charcoal. It is also used to absorb odors and toxins in gaseous solutions, as in home air purifiers and some types of gas mask. The medical use of activated charcoal is mainly the absorption of poisons. [14] Activated charcoal is available without a prescription, so it is used for a variety of health-related applications. For example, it is often used to reduce discomfort and embarrassment due to excessive gas ( flatulence) in the digestive tract. [15]

It may be necessary to let your drawing dry in between layers. Don't rush adding layers, as you may end up with a mess as different value areas pool into one another. This process happens naturally when combustion is incomplete, and is sometimes used in radiocarbon dating. It also happens inadvertently while burning wood, as in a fireplace or wood stove. The visible flame in these is due to combustion of the volatile gases exuded as the wood turns into charcoal. The soot and smoke commonly given off by wood fires result from incomplete combustion of those volatiles. Charcoal burns at a higher temperature than wood, with hardly a visible flame, and releases almost nothing except heat, water, and carbon dioxide. This will establish your low-key values. From there, fill in the square farthest to the right with white charcoal or white conté. If completing an ink wash drawing: Use India ink and water to represent the form and values of a still life, interior, or landscape, working from lightest tones up to the darkest. The documentary film The Charcoal People (2000) [1] shows in detail the deforestation in Brazil, the poverty of the laborers and their families, and the method of constructing and using a clamp for burning the wood.We would say that compressed briquette charcoal is the next step in the briquette evolutionary chain. The key to their improvement is down to the manufacturing and production process. We start off by creating a mix of waste wood sawdust fines. Next, we put the mixture in a special mould and compress the sawdust fines mixture at super high pressure. The compression is a vital step as it removes the majority of internal moisture from the mix, while simultaneously releasing the wood’s natural resin. The resulting briquette is then carbonised, creating a charcoal briquette. The best thing about this methodology is that we say bye bye to any starch or artificial binders – meaning we have a natural odour-free briquette. India ink is very strong, so be careful not to let it stain any of your belongings.

Charcoal and graphite are generally a non-toxicmedium unless large quantities are consumed or inhaled. Charcoal does crumble more easily than graphite and may leave a lot of dust on the paper. If you are particularly sensitive to dust or if you are proceeding with a large charcoal drawing, it may be useful to wear a dust mask so as not to inhale the small dust particles. If you are working with charcoal powder it is highly recommended that you wear a dust respirator or a dust mask. Although both Graphite and Charcoal are carbon based, the atomic structure of each varies quite dramatically. In graphite, carbon has a uniform arrangement, in distinct layers. Between these layers are very weak chemical bonds. As you draw, these weak bonds break allowing each layer to effortlessly leave the main graphite crystal. This property is how pencils glide so easily over your paper. They leave marks from tiny shards of graphite sheared from the main crystal. How do you make Graphite? In this exercise, I would like you to choose two of the three projects detailed below: graphite, mixed materials, and ink wash. You can make your choices based on the materials you have available, your skill level, and your interest level. Personally, I find ink wash drawing to be the most challenging; this is a good choice for more experienced students. As you go from pool to pool, make sure to rinse your brush and pat it dry to avoid unwanted mixing of your ink pools. Also, keep one pool for pure ink. When you find you need to add more ink to a pool, take it from here and add it with your brush rather than taking it directly from the ink bottle.If you’re new to the medium, you’ve come to the right place.
