A man accused of killing his former girlfriend’s infant child will undergo a mental-health evaluation to determine his competency.

Jeremy David Millis faces first-degree-murder charges in connection with the death of 8-month-old Connor Kroviak, whom Millis had been babysitting.

In the motion requesting the evaluation, Millis’ attorney wrote that his client shows symptoms of severe autism spectrum disorder and likely can’t assist in his own defense.

Pima County Superior Court Judge Deborah Bernini granted the evaluation, saying two doctors would interview Millis to determine his condition.

Police reports and court documents said the baby was choked three to four times the night of the incident in January.

Millis told police he was frustrated with the child because he wouldn’t stop crying. Millis squeezed the baby’s throat for several seconds at a time to get him to stop crying, according to the documents.

After the child’s mother, Samantha Fietek, came home and discovered the injuries she took the baby to a hospital. Connor died five days later.

Millis has been released on a 0,000 bond.
