In reflecting on Opinion Editorfor elected state officials and top administrators, I was struck that the piece must have been written some time in the past (when the value of a COLA was real) but then never published.
This year the statutory formula calculation produced a 1/4 of 1 percent adjustment. For most members of the General Assembly that translates to .00 per week in gross wages. .00 per week! Hardly a lavish perk.
Considering the pittance produced, it is remarkable that the Patriot-News would feel compelled to devote nearly a full page of a Sunday Opinion section to critique it in light of the many consequential issue that otherwise might have been explored.
Bemoaning the pension "consequence" for even those members who are returning that per week to the Treasury once again demonstrates the loss of real community-serving perspective. Moreover, for those new members of the General Assembly who express an inability to avoid the pension "consequences," there was an easy solution decline participation in the legislative pension system; it was, after all, their right to decline.
