About this deal

All of the hand-painted cels and background layouts look spectacular, offering more image detail than ever (and more than you might suspect). Hell, even wielding only a small percentage of the original's genius, the live-action Hollywood remake still managed to remain a watchable and visually opulent effort.

A pair of new featurettes join a new commentary track the Ultra HD while the accompanying Blu-ray disc adds another pair vintage bonuses focused on the production and animation. Manga Entertainment at this point were finally delving more into the collector’s edition packaging that Anime Limited and Funimation usually provide with rigid boxes and other physical goodies. Was ich an dem Film so faszinierend finde ist die Atmosphäre, die Regisseur Mamoru Oshii hier kreiert.

Yet the added HDR/WCG and Dolby Vision really makes all the difference here, even in the more reserved shots, bringing all of the tones to life - from Motoko's own naked body, to the lavish office interiors and broken down cityscape ruins, giving depth and vibrancy to the woods and the steels, and to the skies and the sea.Seamlessly merging traditional animation with the latest computer graphic imagery, this stunning sci-fi spectacle challenged the boundaries of mainstream animation with detailed artistic expression and a uniquely intelligent story line. Iconic anime like Akira (1988), Cowboy Bebop (1998), and Ghost in the Shell (1995) were all inspired to one degree or another by the writings of Philip K.

But these anime inspired other Western works in turn, including The Wachowski’s Matrix films (1999-2003). Black levels are strong - not flawless, but often impressively strong nonetheless, and this is a head-and-shoulders upgrade over the preceding Blu-ray, making the 25 year old movie look better than ever, and, but for the animation style, oftentimes almost brand new, and all of that accomplished without any of the nonsense revisionist work that fans rolled their eyes at for the Ghost in the Shell 2. For those not familiar with the details regarding Ultra HD Blu-ray you can refer to my article that includes some pertinent data on the subject. The limited edition release comes presented in a rigid box that houses a steelbook that contains both the 4K Ultra HD disc and Blu-ray disc, since this is also a combo pack release. High dynamic range didn’t really come into play where it made for an emboldened visual display but, I didn’t find the image lacking in that respect, overall.

The results offer a somewhat dated sounding, but satisfying surround sound mix that delivers punchy bass, and plenty of action-based sounds/effects to make the experience fun. Now a decade later, the 4K Ultra HD format has slowly been getting more traction and eventually anime joined the mix, though a majority won’t get the treatment due to the way they were animated and the costs involved. Twenty-five years later, Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell remains a revolutionary sci-fi masterpiece, tackling existential themes and philosophical dilemmas in a thought-provoking and challenging storyline that respects the intelligence of its audience.

My audio/video ratings are based upon a comparative made against other high definition media/blu-ray disc. As people embrace more technological advances, such as enhancing or outright replacing their bodies, where does the line between life and artifice lie? Kusanagi is often contemplative and brooding, whilst her counterpart Batou is more extroverted and lively. The almost-haunting chant of “Making of a Cyborg” in particular has become one of the most recognisable pieces of music in anime, sounding both traditional yet futuristic at the same time – a perfect fit for this film. The disc presents a native 3840 x 2160p resolution image in the film's original aspect ratio of widescreen 1.

e., download their consciousness) via the now omnipresent internet into other machines and human/machine cross breeds. The film’s story focuses on Major Motoko Kusanagi, a young woman who leads a military assault team for Public Security Section 9 in Japan’s Newport City. With a new but sadly small set of supplements, this UHD edition is a notable improvement over previous releases and a recommended addition to the library. Essentially if you are familiar with the US Lionsgate release, then these extras have been brought over to the UK in their entirety.
