About this deal

Biography: Jaya Saxena is the co-author of DAD MAGAZINE (Quirk, 2016) and author of THE BOOK OF LOST RECIPES (Page Street, July 2016). The first one, saying positive things about yourself into a mirror, isn’t really a spell in any sense that a witch would recognize, but self-affirmation is very important. I just picked it up because of the review that I read here: Using Practical Psychology to be More of a Basic Witch by Laura Dale. The problem is that it takes practice and self-awareness for the visualization rituals described in this book to actually work, and this book doesn’t go deep into what visualization and energy work actually are or how to do them.

She likes dogs, skulls, mythical monsters, nonlinear stories, industrial music, large-scale immersive art projects, the old internet, and science fiction comedy from the '80s, and her most useless skill is reading Morse code (not a written language). The most common criticism is that it’s “tumblr witchcraft 101,” and contains almost nothing related to occultism. Unlike so many other books, it highlights the intersectional nature of witchcraft, and a branch of witchcraft that is for EVERYONE. Yes, the contents have a disheartening number of spells listed, but their emphasis on using intuition and their suggestions as a springboard for your own spells makes me hopeful the book is good.

This is followed up with a few “kitchen witchery” recipes that involve infusing food with intention, which I think are great! That aligns very well with my ‘folds’ concept, which are magical garments that represent the subconscious Shadow displayed externally. Even the exercises offered in this book is written in the way so interesting, what with necessary ingredients and a step-by-step on how to perform said exercise. What Saxena and Zimmerman created is a fun, thoughtful, and sometimes very funny way to use rituals to take care of yourself, to create reminders of the way you want to move through the world… Magic, indeed. Spells should be personalized anyway, and they do implore the reader to do what feels right for them, which is good.Ich schätze die Menschen, denen das Buch nicht gefällt, sind oft "Wicca" und diesen fehlt dann die spirituelle "religiöse" Komponente. Host, online creator, and former Amazing Race contestant, Joslyn has plenty of crazy stories to tell.
