Law enforcement officials say one gunman has been neutralized in Wednesday's shooting at the Ford Hood Army base in Texas. The active shooter situation remains ongoing, and four people have been confirmed as dead and at least 14 others wounded in the deadly shooting.
The Chairman of the U.S. House of Homeland Security, Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) told CNN that one shooter, identified as 34-year-old soldier, Ivan Lopez, is among the four people killed in what he called the "soldier on soldier" shooting at the Fort Hood Army Base.
There is no evidence to suggest that Wednesday's shooting is connected to terrorism. However, as the largest military installation in the U.S., Fort Hood is one of several United States Military bases listed as targets on “Jihadist” websites linked to Al-Qaeda.
In November, 2009, Army Maj. Nidal Nasan opened fire at the same base, killing thirteen and wounded 32 others. The Fort Hood massacre, later confirmed as a terrorist attack is the deadliest attack on a domestic military installation in history to date.
Ex-Army Maj. Nidal Nasan was sentenced to death in August, 2013.
In July, 2011, a Texas gun dealer alerted local law enforcement officials about a suspicious character. FBI officials later identified the man as U.S. Army Private Naser Jason Abdo, an AWOL soldier from Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The FBI credited the alert gun shop owner with averting another terrorist attack at the Fort Hood, Texas military base.
In August 2012, Abdo was convicted of plotting a massacre of his fellow soldiers near Fort Hood, Texas and sentenced to dual consecutive life sentences.
