About this deal

It is interesting in form, mixing prose and poetry, and full of sharply ironic insights about Russian society of the day, especially the lives of young women. As you can tell, this is a very pessimistic read and it may leave a hole of longing in the reader’s heart for the main characters in this. When the police tell Claire they've found him, her carefully calibrated existence begins to fracture.

The novel is loosely based on the real life mystery of Lord Lucan, a British peer who disappeared after being suspected of the brutal murder of his children’s nanny and the assault of his wife during an ongoing custody dispute. The spy element ( more trafficking) is rather peripheral to the story despite the publicity surrounding the book suggesting otherwise . Her father's friends painted a different picture stating that Claire's father was innocent, and that Claire's Mother was the unstable one. Described by the New York Times as 'the only Dylanologist worth reading', Clinton Heylin is the author of the acclaimed Bob Dylan: Behind the Shades (1991; revised 2001) and over two dozen other books on music and popular culture, including biographies of Sandy Denny, Van Morrison and Orson Welles, and the two classic studies of punk's origins, From the Velvets to the Voidoids and Anarchy in the Year Zero.Heylin’s more controversial phrases are often picked apart by Dylan fans on social media; in a previous book, he pictured the African American musicians Arthur Crudup and Charley Patton “spinning in their cottonpickin’ graves”. This is definitely the springboard for the ideas in my novels, which I hope are as pacey and entertaining as they are transportive. When you’re reading the book, it will feel as though you are wading through an oil slick, and the other feelings this book may conjure up may include loathing and revulsion.

Drawn from the personal experiences of its author, it's a glittering love letter to the Great White Way — and all the crazy, gifted people who keep it humming. I also thought there were a lot of character names past and present to keep track of and that added to the confusion. She has grown up to become an accomplished doctor and yet, the shadow of her father hangs over her head. A totally addictive page-turner about terrible secrets within a marriage, perfect for fans of Big Little Lies and Sally Hepworth. But then too much turns on the ‘obsessed woman’ trope as our GP heroine is soon spying, blackmailing and disguising herself like something out of a cheap thriller.

Drawn from the personal experiences of its author, this is a glittering love letter to the Great White Way, and all the crazy, gifted people who keep it humming. So when she claims to have seen what appears to be a violent attack on a woman on her way home from a drug-fuelled squat party scepticism abounds, but Isobel is determined to uncover just what she stumbled upon. La protagonista es una mujer en sus treintas, médico de familia e hija de un conocido asesino, el padre cometió su crimen cuando ella contaba con ocho años de edad y nunca fue detenido y sigue prófugo.

But this is closer to Patricia Highsmith territory and is superbly crafted with heart-stopping twists and chills galore. Though the real Lord Lucan had three children, there are only Claire and her younger brother Robbie in this tale. Why must so many revenge fantasies fixate in such detail on the physical mutilation of women’s bodies? Philby’s classy second novel is hard to pin down to any one specific genre combining as it does a number of elements but there is no doubt from the ever-present sense of creeping dread throughout that it’s deep into thriller territory. The fact that Berry's novel was inspired by a true crime may have made the pacing seem strained as the plot meanders toward the unlikely.

Her unhinged and completely unethical stalking finally lead to a potential payoff - will Claire be able to discover if her father is alive or dead, and if alive. An 8-year-old girl and her infant brother are asleep in their home when an intruder breaks in, bludgeons their nanny, and beats their "mum" to within an inch of her life. Although Claire is relatively successful as a physician, her younger brother has significant addiction problems. The fact that he also abandoned his car, with blood-stained seats, is enough to keep the police on the hunt. What a BRILLIANT book… I was on edge every single second… At one point I realised my body was literally tensed up in anticipation. Claire is a very successful doctor now and contends with her brother's drug dependency while working. Now Claire is a successful doctor in London, but each possible sighting of her father sends her into such a state of anxiety she finally decides to seek answers for herself. This delightful fable about the Golden Age of Broadway unfolds the warm story of Artie, a young rehearsal pianist, Joe, a visionary director, and Carrie, his crackerjack Girl Friday, as they shepherd a production of a musical version of A Midsummer Night's Dream towards opening night. This psychological thriller alternates between the events that happened in the past and the current investigation that Claire has begun on her own. In subsequent years he started to cut people off, then randomly hooked up with old flames, telling one he thought he had seven or eight children out there. Slightly confusingly, Gabriela's timeline runs over a number of years whereas Isobel's is just a few days.
