About this deal

You can also change the release angle from 15 to 20 degrees by swapping the default cleats from one shoe to the other. And you can buy ‘easy release’ variants that have a 10-degree release angle. The smaller the release angle, the sooner your foot disengages as you turn your heel outwards.) Verdict My egg beater clip-in pedals are made from brushed aluminum and brass. Since they're well-made, they come apart pretty easily to clean off grit and mud. Yes. You can use standard Shimano SPD cleats with Egg Beater pedals. Still, when your current cleats wear out, it might be a good idea to get Crank Brothers cleats. The difference in performance might be small, but anything that improves performance is worth it if you ask me. Finally, you get more options for float (natural foot rotation while you ride) and release angle (the point at which it actually disengages) than you do with SPDs. More on this below. Performance The Eggbeater 3 is an extreme durable MTB pedal fitted with the same needle bearings as crankbrothers flagship. The body and spring are completely made out of high quality and durable stainless steel, to ensure the perfect stability and a long lifespan. The unique pedal design makes it possible to clip in on 4 sides. The waterproof seals are improved and the eggbeaters design makes it almost impossible for mud and dirt to stay attached to your pedal.

Crank Brothers has been around since 1977. They started out in a Laguna Beach garage. Just surviving as a MTB gear maker is a huge accomplishment, let alone being a big name since the ‘70s. These guys are true industry pioneers. While there are several ‘systems’ of cleats/pedals, the primary ones to look at are SPD, Egg Beaters, and Time ATACs. The other negative is that there’s less underfoot support if you like to shift around on your pedals while standing. This wasn’t an issue for me, but Crankbrothers says that even half the xc racers who use its pedals would choose the small-platformed Candy pedals over the Eggbeater for that reason. You might also appreciate a little extra platform if you use softer shoes. These pedals are very durable, and you will be able to use them for up to five, or even seven thousand kilometers before requiring maintenance, but they are a little heavy, and in situations where extreme mud-shedding is desirable, these pedals fall a little short. Most European cyclists use Shimano. For me personally, I like having SPD on my mountain bike but do not like them for cross-cycling. That said, you might find that they are just what you are looking for. PROSTaking this advice has led to a significant decrease in my step-off distance from the barrier and a substantial increase in my dismount speed.

You may also like to run the pedals on your road / commuter bike. Buy a set of Quattro cleats (CRB-15289) to use on your road shoes. It makes pulling off from junctions a breeze as you have 4 points of entry to the pedals. You can adjust the float and release angle on Eggbeater pedals. Float is how much the ball of your foot can rotate while clipped in. Release angle is how far your foot must rotate before you clip out. There’s a reason pro riders are obsessed with how much their bike weighs. Nobody wants to be lugging around extra metal when going full tilt on a race course. does all of this leave you when it comes to Eggbeater pedals? Bottom Line: Are Crankbrothers’ Eggbeater Pedals Right For You? If the terrain you ride is somewhat extreme and requires big hit jumping, then Eggbeaters are not your best bet. Crank Brothers actually makes a wide range of other pedals for more abusive activity like downhilling. Is there a bodyweight limit for Eggbeater pedals? When these pedals first came out there was some concern about durability. I’m pretty sure Crank Brothers has resolved any major issues. My Eggbeaters have performed superbly. In this regard, I would like to warn you against the use of flat MTB pedals with more aggressive spikes. These work perfectly well for MTBs, where it seems the rule is to never dismount for any barrier, regardless of how long it takes to inch across it, but in the world of CX, dismounting and running isn’t seen as a sign of failure and it won’t be long before you do some serious damage to your calves and/or shins.
