In November 1945 Andre de Dienes, a fashion photographer with a penchant for nude photography, moved to the Garden of Allah Hotel in Beverly Hills. His goal was to find models to photograph nude in the desert landscape for a new artistic project. He phoned Emmeline Snively, the no-nonsense, self-made woman behind Hollywood’s Blue Book Modeling Agency looking for a fresh face. Snively had just signed a determined 19 year old named Norma Jeane Dougherty. Norma Jeane was an orphan whose tenacity and girl-next-door appeal Snively took a special interest in. She told de Dienes she wasn’t sure the girl would agree to pose for nudes but that she was eager for more work and experience. When not working as a fashion photographer Dienes travelled the USA photographing Native American culture, including the Apache, Hopi, and Navajo reservations and their inhabitants. [2] Dissatisfied with his life as a fashion photographer in New York, Dienes moved to California in 1944, where he began to specialise in nudes and landscapes. But de Dienes preferred “a very casual Marilyn” for his pictures. He took her out of Manhattan to Tobay Beach on Long Island. “She returned to the innocent girl I first met,” de Dienes said. Though the trip resulted in a brief marital engagement, de Dienes returned to New York and their romance did not withstand the distance.In his memoirs he remembers the first time he met Norma Jean vividly and with much affection and enthusiasm; “ When Norma Jean arrived at my bungalow later in the afternoon, it was as if a miracle had happened to me. Norma Jean seemed to be like an angel. I could hardly believe it for a few moments. An earthly, sexy-looking angel! Sent expressly for me! The impact Norma Jean had on me was tremendous. As minutes passed, I fell more and more in love with Norma Jean; there was an immediate rapport between us. She responded to everything I said. She started to look around in my room examining all the pictures I put on the walls and began asking questions. I had the immediate feeling that she was something special, something different from most girls and models I had met before her, mainly because she was so eager to ask questions about me and the pictures I put on the walls. She wanted to know many things right away, she was interested in me! She was utterly sincere; she did not wish to speak about herself, except when I asked her my own questions. In 1933 de Dienes arrived in Paris to study art and bought his first Rolleiflex camera. Fascinated with taking pictures, he made a living selling photographs to publishing companies, including Lb Humanite (a Communist newspaper), and worked for The Associated Press until 1936 when famous Parisian couturier Captain Edward Molyneux encouraged de Dienes to become a fashion photographer. In addition to the many fashion assignments from Molyneux, de Dienes created thousands of portraits and street images in Paris, and all over France, from 1935 to 1938. As well as the iconic Marilyn Monroe, Andre de Dienes also photographed Hollywood celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Henry Fonda, Shirley Temple, Ingrid Bergman, Ronald Reagan, Jane Russell, Anita Ekberg and Fred Astaire. He was considered one of the best glamour photographers’ working in Hollywood at the time, and his pioneering techniques, from behind the lens to in the darkroom, were well documented in major publications such as Classic Art Photography, and many other periodicals of the day.
