About this deal

The plot is simple, and for all the meandering that Rash precipitated, it could have been reduced to a short story format. The structure was wobbly; for instance, he built up an imaginary dream world for Laurel to imbibe, where she insisted on knowing and recreating a historical place (that was central to the plot), leading the reader on a launched journey that demanded some kind of realization or corollary. However, Rash just dumped it with a reductive denouement. FIND YOUR COVE

In May 2021, Louise was shortlisted for the prestigious Crime Writers’ Association ‘Dagger in the Library’ award, which recognises an author’s entire body of work having been consistently enjoyed by library borrowers around the United Kingdom, and an author’s longstanding support of libraries. And, like, don't get me wrong, it's FINE. But so much of the story was caught up in marriage drama and women in their late 30s bemoaning their lives as wives and mothers and, like, cannot relate AT ALL.

Lou is also suffering from post-partum depression, and whilst Adam just wants to drink himself into oblivion, and flirt outrageously with Eliza, Lou is developing an addiction to prescription medication, and plans to leave Adam after the vacation is over. In response to Coronavirus (COVID-19), additional safety and sanitation measures are in effect at this property. he's an awful character, but a wonderfully-written character. and definitely my favorite in this book.Laurel is happy and dreams of the day she and Walter can leave the cove together. Then November 9 arrives, and it's the day of Paul Clayton's coming home parade that Chauncey has so diligently planned. The Claytons see a wanted poster for Walter and recognize him. They tell Chauncey and they head to the cove armed with weapons. Laurel and Walter are returning home when they spot Chauncey, the Claytons, Jubel, and Hank tied up. Laurel tells Walter to wade up the creek and if she doesn't meet him that night to go on without her. Laurel is discovered by Chauncey and his mob and Chauncey accidentally shoots and kills her. Jubel and Chauncey are the only ones who show no remorse, as the rest are stunned and abandon the hunt for Walter. Fearing Hank will kill him, Chauncey kills Hank while Hank is tied up on the porch. Walter waits for Laurel for three days before finally deciding to return to the cove. He sees the bloodstains and finds two fresh graves. He walks into town to find people celebrating - the war has ended. Walter sees Slidell in the bar and Slidell explains what happened. Chauncey hasn't been seen since, he says. Slidell fends off Jubel and puts Walter on a train out of Mars Hill. Walter intends to go to New York to play his flute. Deep in the rugged Appalachians of North Carolina lies the cove, a dark, forbidding place where spirits and fetches wander, and even the light fears to travel. Or so the townsfolk of Mars Hill believe - just as they know that Laurel Shelton, the lonely young woman who lives within its shadows, is a witch. Alone except for her brother, Hank, newly returned from the trenches of France, she aches for her life to begin. The couples have not been friends long and they are starting to realise they don't really know each other at all. Much like this very place. This painted lady. We admire her, revel in her beauty, but underneath it all, there's a darkness to her. As we've discovered." ( March 2014) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message) Disclaimer: Jonathan Ball Publishers SA kindly sent me a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. There is a tension at the resort with relations between the hotel and the locals threatening to spill over into violence, also the awkward atmosphere between the families, could threaten the tranquilly of their break and their marriages. As for Laurel, look elsewhere if your preference is for passionate heroines, what she does have is an appealing resiliency, an understated strength. What develops is quietly muted – a love that deepens as slowly & gently as the river that runs through The Cove. With its raw beauty & pervading isolation, it’s The Cove itself that’s the heart of this novel "Nothing but shadow land, there wasn't a gloamier place in the whole Blue Ridge." That and the Appalachian people, brought to life by Rash’s use of simple dialect. “Not being able to talk, that’s got to be burdensome too. I’d think it could make you feel a lavish of aloneness. After my daddy died and Hank was over in France, I was here by myself and it was a hard row to hoe.” This lyrical, heart-rending tale, as mesmerizing as its award-winning predecessor Serena, shows once again this masterful novelist at the height of his powers. Two couples - Lou and Adam and Eliza and Noah - along with the children, intend to do just that but an unsettling air has settled over the resort and something is brewing behind the scenes that is threatening the tranquillity of their break and the longevity of their marriages. With this information, Laurel confronts Walter. He admits that he really is a German stranded in America. Jurgin Walter Koch is his birth name. Despite this reveal, the two still wish to be together. In fact, after the war, they’d like to travel to New York City and marry.

Trigger warnings: suicide (in the past), death of a parent (in the past), alcohol abuse, death, death of a spouse, disappearance of a child, explosions, murder, blood This is the kind of adult thriller that has largely turned me off reading adult thrillers - two married couples and their children decide to spend a long weekend together on a remote idyllic and largely empty island. The tension between them builds over the course of the trip and someone ends up dead.

It's a decent story. Pretty good characters. Beautiful scenery. And I will read pretty much anything that's set in a bookshop by the coast. There were a few problems with this, which keeps it from getting a higher rating. Opening this book, you are whipped away to a scenic island holiday. The author is brilliantly descriptive allowing all your senses a chance to explore this paradise. However, just as you start to relax and enjoy this amazing escape things start going wrong and you release you are embarking on an intriguing read. Also - mild spoiler - Gabrielle magically figures out whodunnit, seemingly out of thin air. There's literally no explanation, even afterwards. She even asks someone else why the person did what they did, so she didn't even know that, but somehow, based on... nothing.. she knows they were the one who did it. So that was kind of infuriating. Also, selective amnesia is a bit of a lazy plot point. Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted. The story itself is rather a slow burn, and felt more like a light domestic suspense rather than a tense thriller. There were two main plot points, one being the secrets and threat of the island itself, and the other the revolving around domestic relationships.
