The combination of this pen and the Fisher refill yield a cost-effective, durable, and attractive EDC writing instrument. The knurled tip also keeps your fingers steady and is very helpful if your hands tend to get sweaty. In this hack a steel component from the Zebra F-402 was swapped in place of the F-701’s plastic part.I also use the Fisher space pen refills which require the removal of the plastic guide cone in the tip. The refill was almost interchangeable with that of the original F-701 but with the change of some internal components the fit of the internals changed slightly as well. Another bonus is that it comes in a coated and slightly textured black finish - a perfect match for stealthy EDCs. The X-701 was highly awaited by fans of “everyday carry” pens but it faced problems shortly after its August 2018 release. The refill was never my favorite due to the typical ballpoint splotchiness, but it's a reliable refill despite the normal ballpoint downfalls.

This prevents the pen from accidentally opening in the middle of the bag or the pocket, and those troublesome ink stains. Apart from the normal downsides of a ballpoint refill, this is a top notch example of a great performing refill.

If you don’t want to drop serious cash on a pen, but want something more substantial than a disposable, the F-701 is still the best option. In summary, the X-701, in many ways, feels like a step backward from the F-701, not a more extreme version (as the “X” in the name would suggest). I have found the only weak point for me was the clip, to remedy this I use the Fisher bullet pen clips in stainless they are way stronger and look a little better in my opinion.
