Seek advice before using if you are breast feeding, pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or suffer from allergies. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Concurrent use with drugs which cause sedation such as anxiolytics and hypnotics may cause an increase in sedative effects, therefore medical advice should be sought before taking chlorphenamine concurrently with these medicines. In the event of an anaphylactic episode, the adrenaline should be injected immediately, and an ambulance called. Although most antihistamines should be avoided by patients with porphyria, chlorpheniramine maleate has been used and is thought to be safe. Should not be used with other antihistamine containing products, including antihistamine containing cough and cold medicines.

Children may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug. This drug can often cause excitement in young children instead of drowsiness. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 or at www.fda.gov/medwatch.A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/ tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. Symptoms of anaphylaxis include breathing difficulties, light-headedness and feeling faint or close to losing consciousness. Carcinogenesis and mutagenesis: In a 2-year carcinogenicity study in rats, cetirizine was not shown to be carcinogenic at dietary doses up to 20 mg/kg (approximately 15 times the maximum recommended daily oral dose in adults). In a 2-year carcinogenicity study in mice, cetirizine administration lead to an incidence of benign liver tumors in males at a dietary dose of 16 mg/kg (approximately 6 times the maximum recommended daily oral dose in adults). The clinical significance of these findings during long-term use of cetirizine is unknown at this time . Patients with renal or hepatic impairment should seek doctor's advice prior to taking this medicine. (see section 4.4 Special warnings and precautions for use).
