About this deal

The second book in the series DEFENDER OF THE REALM: DARK AGE was published in June 2017 and the thrilling conclusion to the trilogy, DEFENDER OF THE REALM: KING'S ARMY is published 7th June 2018 by Scholastic. Alfie is trying to save the Kingdom by night, rule it by day and keep his family together, all the while knowing if he fails, we could be thrown into another dark age. Together with an unlikely ally in the anti-royalist Hayley, Alfie learns his true heritage, protecting the kingdom from all the monsters no one knows exist.

For me, this book has taught me a lot about duty, honour, what a good adventure entails, and how to execute a fantastic plot. Featuring a legendary superhero, a reluctant teen monarch and a secret centuries-long battle; Defender of the Realm is an epic, action-packed, adventure of a novel from debut authors Mark Huckerby and Nick Ostler.Héritier du trône d'Angleterre, Alfie grandit sous les objectifs des photographes qui épinglent ses moindres faits et gestes. I can't remember having read many books in the past, kid-lit or otherwise that were written by two people and I wasn't quite sure how it would work but the writing team that is Mark Huckerby and Nick Ostler is an undeniable force to be reckoned with for creating a story that is packed full of drama, adventure and excitement, a trip into a fantasy world that I thoroughly enjoyed. From the chequered plate in the boot and all the added accessories you can play with online on the configurator, including the adventure pack, the country pack and the urban pack, it really harks back to personalisation and how the Defender and old series I, II and III became such an iconic part of the pan-global landscape. Alfie inherits some seriously cool super weapons which date to the dawn of time, but Hayley makes his job easier with a webcam and microphone. You can turn up to a building site, a film premiere or park outside the Dorchester — which, in fact, I just recently did, and the concierge said people kept coming over to take a look at my Defender.

Fortunately there is a second part as this one ends on a cliff-hanger as the identity of the Black Dragon becomes ominously apparent and surprises the reader at the very end. After the Defender’s losing battle against the Black Dragon, the United Kingdom finds itself under the cruel control of “Lord Protector” Lock, the undead Viking invaders and the monstrous berserkers unleashed by the Raven Banner. Seems like a 5th-grade thriller at first, but the wealth of information about England's monarchy, the suspense, relatable characters and great, cliffhanging ending encourages all readers to shout, Encore! He would like nothing better than to throw off his royal status and lead a normal teenage life, but instead he finds himself unexpectedly propelled on to the throne by the death of his father. It is one of the best exports of British engineering and it has really challenged every other off-road automotive manufacturer. And it’s all interlinked, without the failures you don’t learn anything so you’ll never progress to the successes.

If you like the sound of Alfie's adventures, try another story about a teenage hero in Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz one of my favourite authors. He DEFINITELY did not expect to be DEFENDER OF THE REALM, a legendary superhero, fighting a secret, centuries-long battle to protect the nation from monsters and super-villains. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. It's a story deeply rooted in Britain, exploring famous landmarks and the succession of the monarchy since the dark ages, starting with Alfie's namesake Alfred the Great. The cliff-hanging ending has me on tenterhooks, wanting to know precisely what’s going to happen next.

The first thing that comes to mind when I think about the original Land Rover Defender is British engineering and the new Defender is no different. I've often wondered where the "boy" equivalent of school stories has been hiding - since Harry Potter we've not had many male lead characters in boarding school tales, but we have had the likes of Murder Most Unladylike and so on.And while any contemporary British royal is highly, highly unlikely to descend from Alfred the Great, I can forgive this because it's part of the plot and the book teaches other history lessons. Looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy- impossible not to, given the massive cliffhanger !
