Cotman in Normandy from Dulwich Picture Gallery, which includes a lecture about the artist by Timothy Wilcox, the curator of the gallery's 2012 Cotman exhibition Hue" means colour and indicates that a modern pigment has been used instead of the traditional one. For example, 'Cadmium Red Pale Hue' in Cotman Water Colour is a 'colour of cadmium red pale'. A hue colour is not necessarily inferior. This Winsor & Newton set is great for beginners, as you don’t have to worry too much about blending and it’s easy to keep an eye on how much water you’re adding to the pigment, given these colors come in a solid form. (With liquid watercolors, there’s already so much water in the pigment, it can be easy to add too much fluid.) The sketches were collected by Leeds architect Sydney D Kitson and bequeathed by him to Leeds. Kitson devoted his retirement to researching Cotman’s life and work and in 1937 published ‘The Life of John Sell Cotman’. Kitson also gave Leeds his archive of notebooks, correspondence and research materials. He called it ‘Cotmania’.

John Sell Cotman was born in Norwich, on 16 May 1782, [1] the first child of Edmund Cotman, hairdresser and his wife Ann (née Sell) living at 26 Bridge Street, in St George's parish. [2] Edmund Cotman later became a silk merchant and a lace dealer. [3] Their son was baptised at St. Mary Coslany, Norwich, on 7 June 1782. [3] The family name was written as Cottman in the parish baptism record, which has survived.The Cotman Water Colour range has a more uniform consistency than the Artists' Water Colour range and this benefits beginners as there is less to learn about each individual pigment. The Cotman Water Colour range also relates to the Winsor & Newton Artists' Water Colour range, e.g. Burnt Sienna in both ranges has the same hue. This enables artists to use colours from both ranges with minimal adjustment to their technique.
Winsor & Newton probably has more box sets than other manufacturers. The box can be made of metal or plastic. There are palette boxes that hold up to 48 colours (not recommended unless you're a professional but if you're a professional you'll probably know you won't need so many colours). The main difference is the pans are more difficult to dissolve since they are compressed hardened cakes of watercolour pigment. Even dried paint from tubes dissolve more easily. Usually before using the pans, I would add a drop or two of water to moisten the pans. However pan sets are more convenient because you can just use the pigments straightaway. The pigment saturation of Winsor and Newton paints remains excellent, despite their age. They are well-known to a wide range of artists both domestically and abroad. Winsor & Newton Paints: Good Quality And Saturated Colors The modern organic pigments, e.g. Cotman hue colours, are made of very fine particles which cause them to stain the paper. The traditional colours e.g. earths, tend to lift from the paper more easily. Buy only what you need. Don't buy in advance because you won't know how fast you're going to use them. The Chinese White included isn't quite useful here. Chinese White when mixed is used to tint brighter colours, basically make a lighter version of the colour. Remember than the Cotman colours aren't as intense so Chinese White is not going to be as useful. However, it's opaque so you can use it in concentrated form to cover up mistakes or for special uses such as dotting the eyes.
