The shell of the Giro Scamp is similar to that of an adult mountain bike helmet. It has an integrated visor which is nice to help protect little eyes from the sun and shade their faces. The Little Nutty is very similar to Nutcase’s baby bike helmet but is wider on the sides, is a tad heavier, and is dual-certified for skateboard use. Between the Little and Baby Nutty, it can be a bit hard to decide since they are designed for the same 48 – 52 cm head circumference range. Ultimately, you’re going to see helmet visors much more often in off-road applications like mountain biking than on the tarmac, where cyclists tend to opt for sunglasses. Giro Scamp is available in S and XS sizes, so it is the best bike helmet for kids with smaller heads. The small fit fits children with a head circumference of 49-53 cm, and the extra small (XS) fit children with head circumferences of 45-49. FEATURES:Removable chin bar, dial-adjust fit system, long integrated visor to protect against face plants We’ve tested the Scamp on many kids, and XS is a perfect first helmet for many babies and toddlers while the size Small typically fits our testers from ages 2.5 to 5. At its smallest setting (45 cm), the XS was ideal for our 12-month-old tester to use in the trailer and child bike seats, but by the time she was 2.5 we had to move her up to the Small size.

In older versions of the Scamp, we found that on some testers with long hair, the MIPS anchors can snag their hair. It bothered some of our kids, but others were oblivious to it. Even though they have less material, these helmets must still meet the same safety standards as all others, and the increased cost is mostly the result of deeper structural engineering to make every gram of foam count. The secret to MIPS is a thin plastic shell inside the helmet that is connected to the helmet’s protective foam core with flexible anchors.
