About this deal

If you're looking for the industry standard, it's Instax –which is actually the most successful brand across the entire camera industry, not just instant photography. It's the most affordable, the most versatile (when it comes to offering three different size formats), the most instant, and offers the most conventional image quality. We’re heading into the holidays of yet another year in which film photographers have seen price increases, discontinuations of beloved films, and supply chain issues. But if there’s one thing we know about the future of film, it’s that instant film isn’t going anywhere. Fujifilm and the latest incarnation of Polaroid are still manufacturing loads of film, and if you walk into a Target or CVS you’re more likely to find instant film and instant cameras than rolls of 35mm film. The Instax Square SQ1, on the other hand, does not. It is the least capable of the three currently-made Instax Square cameras (at least, by the spec sheet). In fact, it provides the photographer with nothing more than a shutter button and a control to activate “selfie mode” (which focuses close – about twelve inches away). And that’s it. The I-2 is as comfortable to hold as other Polaroid cameras, which is to say it's a little bit bulky and awkward. The squarish footprint makes the bottom of the camera the natural handgrip. I keep three fingers under the camera and my right index finger over the shutter release on the front, which leaves my thumb to rest on the rear info display. To help keep the camera steady when the viewfinder is at eye level, I use my left hand to support it. I'm a left-eye-dominant photographer, which actually makes the I-2 a little easier to hold centered. Fujifilm Instax Mini LiPlay – The final mini camera in Fujifilm’s lineup is the hybrid Mini Liplay. The main advantage of this camera is that it allows you to take images digitally and select which ones you want to print, so you don’t need to waste film, although it somewhat dampens the serendipity and slightly delayed gratification of direct-to-film instant photography. It also offers a bunch of filters and frame options to customize your prints, and through some curiously applied wizardry it allows you to save a sound as a scannable QR code to turn your image into a multi-sensory memory.

In this article, I’ll review 5 best and most popular square polaroid cameras. I will describe their basic and additional features. Choose between modern or vintage design, wide or small film size for a lower or higher price. If you’re looking for something with a little more style, Fujifilm has recently released the Instax Mini 40. This is essentially the same camera as the Mini 12 but with a vintage-inspired retro redesign. With Polaroid film, you are making a very distinct stylistic choice: these photographs are about character rather than convention when it comes to image quality. There’s a viewfinder for composing pictures. This isn't physically aligned with the lens, but it has parallax correction, so what you see through the viewfinder is pretty much the composition you’re going to get. Today’s instant cameras range from cheap-and-cheerful chemical-only models to digital hybrid models that allow you to reprint images on demand from their built-in memory. Polaroid film is and has always been a square format film (…a bit of trivia – I believe Polaroid recently attempted to sue Fujifilm for making square instant film). But Polaroid film differs significantly from Instax Square in three key areas – image size, quality, and cost. The main improvements from earlier Minis are automatic exposure (no more setting for sunny/cloudy etc.) and better flash compensation. There’s a selfie mode that also works for closeups and… basically no other features. Which is a good thing. Simply point and shoot!

Toward the end of last year, Fujifilm released a new instant camera to use with their Instax Square format film. Called the Instax Square SQ1, it’s one of the simplest and most visually striking instant cameras that the brand currently makes. And my lovely wife surprised me with one for my birthday. In addition, because Polaroids take up to 15 minutes to develop (and contrary to what Andre 3000 says, DO NOT shake it!), they are not the format of choice if you want instant gratification –or if you're out shooting with friends or family on a sunny day, if you don't have somewhere dark (like a camera bag) to stash the prints while they expose. Instant cameras may not offer the highest image quality or creative control, but they make fun gifts for people who just like to take pictures, and sometimes the control freaks among us just need to let go and have fun. And you know how people are always saying to print your pictures? Instant cameras do that! In fact, as roll film becomes more expensive, you might find that the price per image of instant film is actually pretty competitive these days.Using an LCD rather than a physical viewfinder, the Evo lets you preview your exact shot, tweak your exposure compensation and even add lens and and film filters. film is specially designed to power vintage Polaroid Cameras. This film gives beautiful photos when shotting in bright light. Every photo you create is unique and rich textured. Let’s again start with image size. Polaroid film creates a larger image than Instax Square – Polaroid film’s 3.1″ squared compared with Instax Square’s 2.4″ squared. That’s a notable difference. But I’m not sure it tips the scale in Polaroid’s favor. And that’s because Polaroid film is significantly more expensive. We test each camera in a range of environments and under a variety of different lighting conditions. We also take the time to compare each model against its closest market rivals and predecessors.

In operation, it’s about as user-friendly as a Polaroid gets, ideally suited to point-and-shoot photography. You get dedicated controls for the flash and self-timer, the ability to dial in exposure compensation, and it will even capture creative double exposures. Its hybrid design might not win over analogue die-hards but its feature set makes it one of the most versatile instant cameras on the market today. The Polaroid Lab effectively has a built-in camera, which takes a photo of your phone screen (Image credit: James Artaius) The Polaroid SX-70 is another vintage model, and was the world's first instant SLR camera. Like Polaroid 600s, they are no longer manufactured –though they are still hugely popular on the second-hand market, and Polaroid itself even sells refurbished bodies (as do other refurb specialists). The Now+ is Polaroid's most creative camera. On top of the features of the standard Now, it also includes lens filters and offers full manual control – so it's more than just a point-and-shoot camera. It even has a bunch of creative tools accessible via a phone app (including light painting and aperture priority) and also has a tripod mount.

I’ve spent the past few weeks shooting the Square SQ1 around the house, with my kids, out on walks, and even on a frigid night at the beach. In nearly every case, it was pure pleasure. And to my surprise, this camera even made one of my favorite photos of the year. Compared to my Polaroid One Step 2… well, let’s not get into that just yet. Specifications and Features of the Instax Square SQ1 The Mini 90, meanwhile, is the most advanced and creative of the bunch, boasting modes such as Bulb Exposure (for effects such as light painting) and Double Exposure (to take two photos in the same exposure, with one superimposed over the other). The new addition is an Impossible frog tongue to shield photos as they exit the camera. It also has a built-in automatic flash that you can turn on and off. It has a fixed-focus lens and sliding close-up lens that lets you focus on a subject up to 23.5″.The key things to look for are the lens and the range of shutter speeds supported. Not all instant cameras have variable shutter speeds, which means that when the light drops you’ll need the flash to fire to get a decent image. If you’re feeling creative and want to do things such as light-painting you’ll want a camera that has a wide range of shutter speeds or, better yet, a bulb mode, where the frame of film is exposed for a chosen period. Instax mini 9 camera is light and simple to handle which is why it’s good for kids also. You can buy the camera in color green, blue, dark grey, pink, purple, yellow, or white. There are also limited edition Star Wars, Frozen 2, and Toy Story 4 themed models.
