It's likely that Ella's character/storyline wasn't intended for a similar weightage, but that is what I wanted from the book anyway and that is what hindered my enjoyment to some degree. This half of the story is told in atmospheric tonal drawings that seem oddly voyeuristic – Ella is being observed, never aware that her image is being captured.

With its silent, solitary and quietly observing ghost always sitting in the half-light, never quite coming centre stage for us to see her clearly, it is also absolutely in the tradition of English ghost story writing. I don’t have to join in, but still I feel part of their gang—on the edges looking in, watching, listening, but happy to be included. Children I’ve spoken to have sympathised with the plight of the relentlessly-bullied Mary, sided with her and booed the adults – after all, most adults in children’s fiction are useless in one way or another, they have to be to allow the children to go on an adventure. I found the book unique, chilling, and atmospheric, but honestly, I wasn’t happy with parts of it, especially the unexplained abrupt ending.Since then she has workedwith a range of UK publishers including The Folio Society, Penguin Random House and David FicklingBooks. The actions of Ella are depicted in image followed by Mary who narrates her experience within her diary.She seeks peace by creating beautiful creatures; with infinite care and attention she makes little dolls, finely-crafted little figures, often characters from her favourite books. Mary lives a very secluded and isolated life at Thornhill whereby she spends most of her time confined to her room at the top of the house surrounded by her dolls which she makes from clay and considers them her friends. They bully to make themselves feel better about whom they are; they project their weaknesses and insecurity on to others they deem similar.
