She has a jerk of an ex-husband who never misses an opportunity to smirk upon her. And he has just fired the nanny – a help Finlay desperately needs if she’s ever going to pull herself out of financial dependency and looming deadlines for her new book.While you have to suspend some logical belief when reading these books (Finlay seems to just always happen to find herself in the middle of the action, find the right clue at the right time, be told top secrets, etc.), that’s also what makes the series so entertaining. Finlay Donovan Is Killing It has got to have one of the most intriguing setups I've ever seen. And that setup comes to pass in one of the best scenes I've read in a long time. At one point I was howling with laughter, causing my husband to come over and ask if I was all right. Finlay and Vero head to Atlantic City, where their “getaway” acts as a cover for a deal with a loan shark, a search for a stolen car, and the saving of Vero’s crush Javi. And things become extra complicated when Finlay’s ex and her mother accompany them. Not understanding they were discussing the plot of Finlay's floundering novel, this woman now mistakenly believes Finlay to be a successful contract killer. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of this book is that it both seems over the top and implausible and completely believable at the same time, which is quite a feat. All of the secondary characters were a joy to read, and Finlay's kids definitely helped provide extra comic relief at different points as well. As funny as this book was, it also managed to be a clever mystery without ever feeling overwrought and also kept me guessing throughout, although the beauty of this book is the thrill of the ride. The ending is absolutely fitting and certainly opens the door for a full series, and I would love to see more from our scrappy heroine!

All those poignant thematic bits are usually buried, and it takes me several passes to mine them out. Even then, I still need at least two passes late in the game to smooth out the rough edges at the line level. The Stephanie Plum series definitely helped shape my vision for this book. Unlike the YA market, where genre feels much more fluid, I concede that getting drunk and stuffing a wad of Delia’s Play-Doh in the exhaust pipe of Theresa’s BMW may not have been the best way to handle the news when he’d told me they were getting engaged, but letting her walk away with half my advance and my husband felt like salt in the wound.

She can’t pay her bills! Of note, I read a print copy of the first book and listened to the audiobooks for the remainder of the series, and I honestly enjoyed both formats. I think you can easily choose either and have a great reading experience.
