About this deal

Only having read this particular book by Shepard, I can’t see myself reading any of her other books. I guess I was looking for a complicated plot when it became apparent to me that I was looking for something that was not there; the plot was simple.

The intrusive Nyx selection process has forced Iris to confront this, probing into her past, seeking out “the person most likely to convince her to stay”. Sara Shepard graduated from New York University and has an MFA in Creative Writing from Brooklyn College. I absolutely love Sara Shepard, so it pains me to give this book only 2 stars, but I just never really connected to it.Payments made using National Book Tokens are processed by National Book Tokens Ltd, and you can read their Terms and Conditions here. In this five-part series, US happiness expert and positive psychologist Michelle Gielan and British journalist and author Oliver Burkeman explore ways to become truly happier, backed up by scientific evidence. Every now and then, a book comes along and pins down the wild thoughts that have been circling around in your brain as you question the meaning of your life in the bath at midnight. Although, and some points the book got very confusing and I had to stop and think what was going on.

What struck my friend most about it, and myself shortly after, was how simple yet captivating it was in equal measures. Filled with sharp observations about the way in which we live now, Everything You Ever Wanted is both an acute satire of our social-media dominated times, and a haunting examination of depression and anxiety rendered in diamond sharp prose with barely a wasted word. I appreciated the various points of view but the ending felt half done and I wondered if the lack of genuinely sketching out one of the main characters hurt the story. The whole time I was reading it I was irritated by all the characters, not because they were horrible people (but they were) but because they were all so flatly drawn. I really hoped that Sara Shepard explored the grief part more in depth since it was hinted at towards the end.

While the fast-paced, well-written, intriguing and unique plot full of colourful and diverse characters made it an incredibly easy and enjoyable read. The biggest set ups of the plot never materialize into anything (Silvie never meets “the boy’s” dad, we don’t see the confrontation with Charlie and his wife after his meeting with Bronwyn, etc. Scott is in a process of investigation, as he is accused of having been aware of the hazing and allegedly did nothing to stop it -- before leading to a probable case of murder. One of her sons, the adopted, troubled one, coaches wrestling at the school and the boy had been a team member. Disclaimer: As a child my one ambition was to gain passage on a space shuttle heading to colonize Mars. In the absolutely packed Act II, the dark fantasy resumes and the Sandman expands into the French Revolution, ancient Rome, 19th-century San Francisco, eighth-century Baghdad, and beyond. Through the lens of Life on Nyx, Sauma also scrutinizes reality TV and the issues surrounding contestants and their mental wellbeing with a subtle nod to Orwell’s 1984 and a modernisation on the idea of ‘Big Brother is always watching you. Sir Michael Caine knows a thing or two about gangs: whether that’s joining one as a kid, or playing them in movies for over 50 years. It is only when we peel away the layers of the past that we clearly see the present and begin the future, thus fulfilling our destiny.
