About this deal

I love this fragrance. I bought it in the 27oz splash version, but popped the cap and poured it into a spray bottle. After a shower, I'd spray it above my head and let the mist fall upon me as I breathed in deeply while my eyes were closed. It's cheap enough to not worry about wasting any, and even with doing this daily, the bottle lasted me nearly a year. A mosquito bite or a paper cut? Nothing burns so deliciously as a dab of 4711. Oh, all those memories. I had a small box set with 6 miniature bottles that I guarded as my most valuable possession. I remember that sense of panic when the first bottle was empty and only 5 remained.

My ex bf in college wore this. His father was French and lived in France, and he'd visit his dad every summer. I mention this because there is history and nostalgia for me in this scent, but also because French can be snobs about perfume (rightfully so in many cases), and it passed the test in the case of the old bf's family... and this is a German-born scent! I can easily agree that the sillage and longevity are nothing to write home about, but it's hard to complain about either when my 90ml bottle was about 13CAD on sale. I find it's a nice little burst of freshness with a pleasant citrus smell... and that does make sense, when basically every layer of it has some kind of orange or orange oil. While the lavender and rosemary aren't very pronounced, I suspect they take a bit of the edge of. I could easily imagine myself carrying around a little bottle in my bag to freshen up during a hot day in the city or the next conference I attend, especially since it's so inoffensive to spray, even around my slightly fragrance sensitive partner. And, thank-you so much for sharing the multiple uses for colognes, universally. May I say that I have recently followed in the footsteps of my Queen: Sophia Loren! She rolls her hair in Chanel spray perfume. Miracle of miracles I found one of my high school scents: Jai Ose online. Oh this smells rich on me, and the memories of the 1970’s… Well, you had to beeeee there! It has a bit of dark looking oil in the juice, and I mix it with Frizz Ease on my wet hair. Well, my hair is softer, and I love the effect. Now all I need is the husband! LOL The closest cousin to 4711 is Guerlain's Eau de Cologne Imperiale, composed some seven decades later, and favoured by the French aristocracy. The differences are subtle; 4711 is lighter and more floral, while Imperiale is richer and more herbal, thanks to good doses of rosemary and verbena. Performance is roughly comparable, although 4711 has much more modest sillage. Still, it's perceptible as a skin scent more than a couple of hours in.

Floral

I think that all sunscreen manufacturers have taken inspiration from this formulation. This stuff seriously just smells like sunscreen to me. But a good, high-quality sunscreen.

This smells super similar to the Atelier Cologne Lemon Island. Not exact but I just tested my theory on my husband and he agreed. The 4711 is more herbal, like for me the basil really shines. The Lemon Island is more warm vanilla. Am I crazy or does anyone else draw this comparison! I got this as a gift for my friend who knows everything about Napoleon, down to what cologne he used. This is a frugal guy who doesn’t really care for fragrance or understand my interest in it, so he said, “if this was good enough for the emperor, it’s good enough for me.” Sabetay, Sébastien (1960). Les Eaux de Cologne Parfumée. Sta. Maria Maggiore Symposium (in French). Victoria: Maybe, I should visit Cologne at all in a perfume pilgrimage of sorts. 🙂 I have no excuse, since we are so close! In 1811, the continuous house numbering was changed to a system of numbering streets separately, as is common today. Fischer, Carmen (2011). " 'Französisch Kram' aus Köln" (PDF). Damals (in German). Vol.43, no.6. pp.70–71. Speaking of noticeable, it's very unlikely anyone will smell this on you. It's much more of a thing you'd use to make yourself feel fresh and clean for a little bit without trying to grab attention.
