About this deal

Spoiler Opening: The Dramatis Personae at the beginning of Charlie Bone and the Time Twister gives away the fact that Emma's endowment allows her to turn into a bird - information that otherwise isn't revealed until halfway through that book.

One exception to the poor adults was Uncle Paton; there was some depth of character and some struggle for him in the beginning - something he needed to overcome, and he ended up being a staunch supporter of Charlie's - but again, he would just leave Charlie in the hands of the boy's evil grandmother, and it felt like this was just unrealistic. Who would have thought that the first book (which I read in a day) and the last one (a week- but the VERY BEST) were a hit (on me)! The relationships (which were a little out of subject when the children were involved- Tancred and -forgot her name-, Lysander and lauren and Emma and Tancred) had effects on the plot. Uncle P. and Julia Ingledew's relationship was nice. And I really liked the suprise when he asked her to marry him (in hospital). Carlie's father (of whom I suspected, and was right), Lyell, hid the box in a place that neither I would have never thought of- under the organ seat at the cathedral. Was also the red knight and never went whale watching. PC Singh's is a descendant of the red king (never, ever suspected that). My Instincts Are Showing: Asa at times. Especially prominent where Yolanda was concerned, as he was attracted to her specifically because her powers were similar to his. Multigenerational Household: Charlie's household consists of him, his mother, both his grandmothers, and his great-uncle. It has been so long since I read this series, that I honestly can't even remember how I felt about it as a child. Obviously, I enjoyed it, otherwise I never would've continued after finishing this first one.Chronic Hero Syndrome: Both Charlie and his father have this to some degree. Both can't stand by and do nothing when they see someone who needs their help. Timoken (aka The Red King) is the same, shown when he rescues Beri, Edern, Gereint, Peredur, Mabon and others from slavers in The Secret Kingdom. He also rode around the countryside as a knight defending his people after the grieving period for his wife was over. Hypnotic Eyes: Manfred's original power, though it begins to wane to make way for a newer, much more destructive one.

Classic magic and mystery from one of Britain’s best-loved authors of fantasy adventure. Perfect for fans of Harry Potter, Eva Ibbotson, Cornelia Funke’s Inkheart and Shane Hegarty’s Darkmouth. On top of all that, there's no indication that Charlie's grandma or any of her sisters have any kind of power. It's stated that they're powerful, but there's no power actually mentioned or even alluded to. They can't even figure out how to get into Ben's house to look for the case they want (for some reason) - four supposedly powerful adults can't figure out how to get past a relatively gullible 10-12 year old kid who is perpetually home alone.

It May Help You on Your Quest: In the second book, Miss Ingledew gives Charlie a Welsh word dictionary which Paton had in his possession when he was run over. It ends up being the key to using Skarpo's wand. Billy Raven - Bloor's Academy student, starts off as Charlie's friend, endowed with the ability to understand and communicate with animals.

The Children of the Red King Series in Order (8 Books)

Charlie Bone and his Uncle Paton are visiting Charlie's old house while his parents are out whale watching (on their second honeymoon). While there he finds that his whole upstairs floor area was ripped up and they find that there were people inside the house earlier. When Charlie goes to Bloor's Academy he finds a new boy is there that he has to guide around. His name is Dagbert Endless because his last names are "as endless as the seas". Dagbert's endowment is to drown other people, controlling water. Dagbert has to be around Charlie all the time, so he starts to drive his friends away by insulting them. Later Charlie finds out that his great Aunt Venetia will marry a man who has two young children. I wanted to like this series, and in some aspects I did. I really liked the premise and the setting. I enjoyed how it delved into the history of Red King's family and how the author was able to introduce and explain the children's powers. I Never Told You My Name: Alice Angel knows Olivia's name immediately when she and Charlie walk into her shop, and uses it repeatedly. It doesn't say much for Charlie's intelligence that he doesn't think anything is wrong until Alice also says his name. It turns out that, unknown to them Alice is Olivia's next door neighbor, godmother, and self-declared guardian angel and a friend of Charlie's Uncle Paton.

She has a part time job though. Where is that money going? Why doesn't she get a full time job? Why isn't she looking for other work? Why isn't his other grandmother doing anything? The fourth instalment of the international best-selling series from Jenny Nimmo starring Charlie Bone. Tell Me About My Father: Charlie asks this of his mother at the beginning of Midnight for Charlie Bone. This was an excellent continuation to this series and more discoveries are starting to come out concerning Charlie Bone’s missing father,. However, to adult readers, it’s pretty obvious where he is. There is enough going on into the story that you don’t actually think a lot about his father. This is a fast-paced, fun, fantasy series which not quite as serious as The Harry Potter Series but it’s still a good place for children to start before getting into Harry Potter books that relatively heavy for them.Have We Met Yet?: When Amy and Charlie go to Bloor's Academy in the fifth book to finally awaken Lyell, Lyell doesn't recognise them. Two follow up books, Henry and the Guardians of the Lost and Gabriel and the Phantom Sleepers, were written a few years after the prequel trilogy. Benevolent Ruler: The Red King was certainly this, when he ruled the Red Castle centuries ago. He was kind and fair to all who were put under his care, and everyone respected and liked him.
