About this deal

Stay out of the sun:The sun's UV rays is exactly what causes car plastic trim to fade. Don't apply the trim restorer products in the sun. Make sure you wash and dry the area:Ideally, you'd do a exterior plastic trim restore session after a car wash anyway, but make sure the plastic surface area you plan to apply your choice of trim restorer product to is thoroughly cleaned and dried before using any of these products. Using a heat gun to heat up the trim can bring out the oils in the plastic. However, all plastics are different and only so much oil can be taken from the plastic. It would also be best to test on a hidden piece of plastic before you attempt visible areas. I’m a big fan of Meguiar’s products. They’ve actually managed to create useful enthusiast grade products and make them available to everyone. It used to be if you walked into a big box store or automotive store your only options were Armorall or some no name snake oil product. Now you actually have useful options.

Soak the pad with several drops of product. Use the AP1 Lint-free Applicator supplied to spread the coating onto the surface of your trim. For the application of C4 on these, I preferred to use a detailing swab as this was easier to get into the tighter spaces recessed into the bumper cover. Work in a well ventilated area, at a temperature above 5 degrees Celsius and out of direct sunlight. Wear the gloves provided. The one on the left is cleaned and has the coating applied, while the one on the right is still in the condition that the car arrived in.As with the cowl trim, you can see that the dark color has been restored to the piece and should remain for upwards of 2 years. It may take a couple applications and some elbow grease to work the product into the trim to an even finish. To be fair, I’d rather use a product that took a little work to apply but lasted than one that was super easy and washes away the first time it rains.

For heavily textured trim take the time to ensure all crevices are covered, and that all residue is also removed Before starting ensure you have enough product for all intended trim surfaces. E.g For a Mini (30ml) you will require more product compared to a Golf (15ml)Park your car in a garage when at home and try and park it in a shaded area when you’re away from home. Once you have spread the product onto a single piece of trim, immediately remove excess product using a Microfibre Buff Cloth The final option would be to simply paint the plastic trim. The plastic may be past restoring and this would be a permanent fix. Alternatively, you could plasti dip the plastic trim or even use automotive vinyl wrap to cover up any defects.

The process I use to paint trim is to first clean it really well, then wipe with a wax and grease remover, then spray an adhesion promoter, and finally paint with a flexible primer and satin paint meant for exterior use. It’s an aspect of car detailing which can really take the final finish of a vehicle to the next level. You may well have the paintwork, glass and wheels all looking beautifully clean and protected, but plastic trim can often need its very own attention. Gtechniq C4 is one of the go-to products for plastic trim in need of some love and in Joe Huntley’s latest YouTube video, he shows you exactly how you can prepare surfaces ready for a coating of this super-effective product. The subject of this detailing video is a classic Porsche Boxster and pretty much all of the trim in question was in desperate need of some refurbishment. Wing mirror surrounds, window trim, engine bay, wipers etc all providing the perfect opportunity to showcase exactly why Gtechniq C4 is quite the step up from most trim restoration products. Gtechniq C4 – Unrivalled Durability The rear bumper guards also were in poor condition and needed some attention. These were cleaned just like all the other trim pieces before applying the coating. After the car and the trim has been washed with a shampoo that does not contain any waxes or forms of protection and dried, the trim then needs to be prepared before applying C4. This can be done by using an all purpose cleaner. When I was applying C4, I opted to use Gtechniq W2. This is recommended by Gtechniq as the cleaner of choice. Given that this is recommended by Gtechniq, I thought it was the best way to apply the C4. If you prefer to use a spray formula, the Torque Detail plastic restorer is the best option. It’s a 3-in-1 spray that restores, shines and protects plastic, vinyl or rubber surfaces. The brand claim that it’s the easiest trim restorer to use on the market and they aren’t wrong. The advanced formula uses true nanotechnology, which permeates plastic and provides protection for up to 6 months. Make sure before you start you have enough product for all of your trim. For example, if you have a Mini (30ml) you would need more product than you would on a Golf (15ml)
