Yet that one glaring issue - its horrible ergonomics - means that unless you're very confident in your ears' size and worthiness, everyone should be demoing them before making a purchase. The distant sounding vocals and the massive soundstage with excellent instrument separation continue here as well. These have been around for about 5 years, but consistently still show up on the lists of the best headphones along with the ZMF Verite-Closed and the Focal Stellia. Sound-wise the Z7 offers a more focused, more robust and less refined signature than the full-size Z1R.

At the Disco’s “High Hopes” is the best example of simbilance from the highs on the Z1R I’ve experienced. Extension is great but I think the presentation is tailored for specific purpose, long-term listening pleasure. It creates a foundation that supports, rather than overwhelms, a bass you can feel in your core without losing sight of the music's soul. The side of the head band has nice numbered slotted positioning to adjust the headband to your head. This definitely more of the flavour that the Z1R already offered, but I don't think it makes the Z1R sounds too warm at all.Though most of the time I find myself having newly discovered preference for the IER-Z1R and 1A; as there is some real intrigue there. I wanted to be able to compare these two since the XTC-C currently holds my “Best Closed-Back” rating and the Sony is the older contender.

Mids are excellent with plenty of details to satisfy, smooth but not overly so and can still expose both details and recording imperfection.
