About this deal

At the start, each player gets a capitalist card with a special power and a unique starting business. Once you’re comfortable with the basics, players can use the unique player cards that are included in the game.

The game felt a little like Nidavellir with the bidding that always rewards even the losers (through compensation). This means that they will take the resource shown on the top row of the card multiplied by three – if this was one coal, then they would take one coal three times. If you are not paying attention, you literally don't know how much the others are earning (or how much they can potentially earn, with the right tweaks); you are effectively playing a blind mutliplayer solitaire with limited chances of winning. Take two well-known design principles, insert a twist, create an immersive yet easy-going and fast gameplay, and you might as well be looking at gaming's next big thing. Each has two effects: one that you can use after purchase and a second that you can also activate when it’s upgraded. Running your engine feels weaker after the white heat of the auction, but there’s still a good sense of fulfillment in growing your pile of cash. Ultimately, Furnace is about creating an engine that efficiently makes money from the resources you’re collecting. Furnace also includes capitalist cards that contain unique effects, and if you want, you can choose to deal one out to each player at the start of the game.

The other components are limited to cardboard coins and upgrade tokens, with wooden coal cubes, steel bars and yellow drums of oil. The business cards then offer decent diversity between compensation, resource and exchange effects but the combinations begin to feel thin after a while. The players that bid for a Company but did not win it get compensated for their effort, as per the Company's instructions. The components are decent without being amazing, and the box is perhaps a bit bigger than it should be whilst also still being small enough to fit in a rucksack or hand-luggage style case. So it’s a constant multi-way balancing act trying to win what you need while also getting the necessary compensation and putting a spanner in other players’ works at the same time.If you used the basic effect of a non-upgraded card, you cannot upgrade it and then use its additional effect in the same round. The new cards are absolutely fantastic, because they’re significantly different, but also intuitive. If not, well, there is a bit of an auction and some nice card play, but ultimately… see the box lid. The highest value token will win the card when the bidding is over, but anyone else who has placed their disks will be compensated based on the value of their losing disk. Engine-Building is the process by which you will develop your powers or abilities in a game by collecting cards, resources or other powers. That said, the expansion also adds components for a fifth player, and I could see that going for a full two hours if players AP bad enough, and I think that’s pushing too far past the limit. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. In every round, half or more of the available cards will boast the sort of compensation that will have multiple players drooling to milk a loss for all its worth. Companies don't just state what they do in their basic form, but what they will do once you upgrade them. And while they may speak clearly enough to get a game into my collection, it takes a solid game to stay. This makes players think a lot more about what they bid on from rounds two onwards and creates a much more challenging game experience. Of course, while it’s tempting to use your bids to screw up other players’ plans, you also need to get your own supply chain running. Furnace; or as its full title on the box more accurately describes, ‘An Engine-Building game by Ivan Lashin: Furnace. There may be another card that would compensate you with two Iron if you lost the bid for it, and another that would allow you to convert Iron to Oil.
