Amanda Griffiths is a design lecturer for the BA (Hons) Fashion Textiles course and teaches Design across the Textiles specialisms. Amanda is a graduate from the RCA and has been a visiting lecturer and Personal Tutor on the RCA Textiles course for many years. She has worked Internationally as an In house Knitwear Designer for companies such as Maxmara, Whistles and Liberty London and has worked as a freelance knitwear designer and consultant, selling to clients such as DKNY, Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, Missoni, Gap, French Connection among others. She is also a partner in Jeff Cottenden Photography. Clients include, The Royal Opera House, Barbican, Sony, Conde Nast, and Penguin Random House. Amanda has an extensive range of Higher Education experience in the UK.

The inspiration from the ocean is also evident even upon first glance and the intuition the piece was created with is not to be underestimated. Moving forward with creativity, I aspire to one day be able to pass on my knowledge of my own design approaches to others, whether through teaching or giving talks to embroidery guilds. Ellen Anderton – 2022 My job in The Funk Files is to interview “pioneers on the embroidery frontier.” That’s you! What is the embroidery frontier, and what does it mean to be a pioneer here? In collaboration with fashion designer Olya Glagoleva, artist Lisa Smirnova transformed a collection of clothes into a series of art. Spending a maximum of 100 hours on every garment, Smirnova hand-embroidered bursts of color onto the fabric, telling a story with her work. This project, called Artist At Home, aimed to converge two worlds: the painter's home and her studio, or her closet and her artwork. By working together, both Glagoleva and Smirnova demonstrate that art doesn't have to be stationary, that it can indeed be worn on-the-go. Additionally, the artist takes an Impressionistic approach with her brilliant hoop art. Each colorful strand works in unison with one another, like paint off the wispy hairs of a brushstroke.
The embroidery originally began as just a digital construction. I created many different shapes, embroidered them out on the multihead machine and then working on a mannequin pinned, placed and changed them around until I liked the composition that it had of working up the body and around the shoulder. Then I sewed them all together. Brought up in a small village in Lincoln, under the legendary Red Arrows training path, I relocated and trained for a degree in Fashion Design at the University of Derby in the late 1990s, after which I spent 10 years working mainly as freelancer and consultant for a variety of designers and companies around the UK.

Meredith Woulnough‘s detailed embroideries embody the beauty and fragility of the natural world. The Australian artist's traceries are created with a technique that makes use of a domestic sewing machine and a base cloth which is dissolved in water after the piece is completed, leaving behind elaborate skeletons that mimics patterns of leaves, shells, and coral. Woulnough's delicately knotted threads form complex veined systems which she then pins into shadow boxes, strengthening the resemblance to elegantly preserved specimens.
