Currently, only 72 cameras are allowed to operate Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. But a measure is now being considered for submission to the Maryland General Assembly that could change that. It s an idea supported by County Police.

Traffic safety cameras, speed cameras do reduce incidents of speeding. They do reduce traffic accidents and to expand their use would be beneficial, says Major Robert Liberati with P.G. County Police.

The County also says that the current cameras have changed the behavior of drivers so much so that they expect an 11-percent drop in revenue from tickets this year. Still, motorists are concerned about a potential expansion of the program.

They're just trying to come up with new schemes to get our money, says motorist Kemar Morris.

I think it would be a good thing. I wouldn't like it but it's for the safety of people, disagreed Diamond West.

Currently, the County is prohibited from charging late fees for fines not paid by the deadline. If passed, that too would change.
